Judged: Emmy Nominations 2014

This may not come as a shock after seeing the content of my blog, but I am a massive award show buff and try to watch every single ceremony related to such subjects or at least try and know everything about them if I can't in fact, watch them. After all, I am the girl that pleaded with her Mum to ring up Sky and request they give us the movie channels for a night just so I could watch the Oscars. (It worked though, don't judge).

And because I watch a crazy amount of television shows, I always feel a little more involved with the ones that focus on that category, like the Emmy's for example. I feel like because I've actually watched 99% of the shows that are in the running for awards, I feel like I can judge it a little more than film awards.

So when they announced all of the nominees for the 2014 Emmy Awards, I couldn't help but pick holes in the nominations I really didn't agree with. I always come to the conclusion that the Emmy's just can't let go of some shows that they clearly think are still good but most viewers have switched off and gotten bored. Biased about their noms much? In this years case, I sadly think so. So here's the lowdown of the things I think are totally wrong (and right) about this year's nominations...

So, first up, I had a problem with the Leading Actress In A Drama Series nominated this year. Okay, so Kerry Washington is pretty darn good in Scandal and Robin Wright is absolutely perfect as Claire Underwood in House Of Cards (and who I undoubtedly want to win), but Claire Danes up for her role in Homeland again?! Also, I can't help but think it's only the Americans that love Downton Abbey THIS much and whilst she was good, I don't think Lizzy Caplan's performance in Masters Of Sex was good enough to warrant a nod.

My main issue however, is how the best actress on television at the moment, wasn't mentioned at all and that is Tatiana Maslany. The Orphan Black star not only plays nearly every main character in the science-fiction series but she plays them so well, even as a fanatical viewer, you forget that she does! She's THAT good. Each character has a different dialect, different look and insanely different personalities and the fact that she hasn't been nominated is quite frankly, a joke.

Whilst it's only a small gripe as of course, it's a great show, but I can't help but feel the categories in which any Breaking Bad actors are nominated are going to be utterly pointless on the night. You might as well just give them the awards now! Much like when 30 Rock was ending and the Emmy's gave them a multitude of awards, I feel it will go the same way for Heisenberg and the gang. At least we know when to get up and make the teas when viewing, I suppose.

Another niggle of mine was the amount of nominations Game Of Thrones has received. Contrary to [very] popular opinion and even though I do actually watch it, in my opinion, GOT is one of the most overrated shows broadcasting at the moment and the great number of nominations it has received this year further adds to this opinion. Mad Men is another programme that I think the same way about. The first few seasons were great but it has been going downhill for a couple of series now but the nominations still keep coming in thick and fast for the 60's drama.

On a more positive note, it's great to see some refreshing nominations however, like those for new shows Orange Is The New Black and Fargo. I would have liked to have seen Yael Stone (for her role as Lorna Morello) from OITNB to get a nod, but I can forgive them for that. It's also nice to see some recognition for Saturday Night Live performances which don't typically register on the Emmy's wavelength. I'm also a massive fan of Seth Meyers so at least they're in my good books in terms of host!

So there's my meaningless, grumpy opinion on all things Emmy 2014, and I guess we'll just have to wait until August 25th to see what's going to happen with each category. As long as Danes doesn't win again, I'll think I'll be okay.
