Five Reasons You HAVE to watch Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Yesterday, Netflix launched it's seventh Netflix Original adult-aimed programme in the form of comedy, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and boy, did they do well with this one!

Its simple format has each episode following wide-eyed and wonderfully weird Kimmy Schmidt as she learns about modern life and makes a life for herself in New York City, after being saved from a Reverend-run underground cult, she had been a prisoner of for 15 years, believing that the rest of the world had been destroyed. (Yes, I assure you, it's a comedy series).

After an epic binge-watching session, I give you a mere 5 reasons why you should check it out...

It's Community meets Arrested Development meets 30 Rock

If you liked any of those comedies mentioned above then you are bound to love Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It's similar to all three with gags that often fall upon one-liners and physicality for their execution but it works brilliantly.  It doesn't take itself too seriously like Community and often falls into "silly" territory but it's endearing AND entertaining. With its sweet and likeable characters, its jokes are inoffensive and makes for a show that is incredibly easy to watch.

It's just a comedy

At first glance this statement might seem like a negative one but it's just the opposite! Whilst Netflix Original's in the past such as Orange Is The New Black and Bojack Horseman have been labeled as comedies but often play to fans who have more of a taste for dark and black humour, Kimmy Schmidt is nothing of the sort, its humour is as innocent as its title character!

There's no other tone to it other than funny and it's refreshing to have a silly comedy through and through gracing Netflix's impressive roster of original programming. With trends most often stating that people tend to addictively watch thrilling, drama shows on Netflix, things like Supernatural, House Of Cards and Prison Break, it's a nice change to see a new comedy that can give them all a run for their money.

The ensemble cast

Whilst the show is undoubtedly owned by the lead, the supporting characters make for many of its great scenes. Kimmy's unbelievably wealthy boss, Jacqueline Voorhees (Jane Krakowski) and flamboyant roommate Titus play off of her brilliantly in many scenes.

An unexpected delight is Jacqueline's stepdaughter Xanthippe, played by Dylan Gelula who delivers a perfectly petulant antagoniser for relentlessly optimistic Kimmy, as she swears to get her fired from being her new found babysitter.

It's created by comedic genius Tina Fey

Okay, and some other dude (Robert Carlock) who also helped her write award-winning 30 Rock but you get my point. You can see both of their influences throughout the whole first season and some of the lines written within the show are simply hilarious! It's not just Krakowski's involvement that reminds you of the duo's previous show, their quick wit permeates each episode and the perfect pacing of their jokes makes you want to keep watching more and more.

Ellie Kemper

Undoubtedly, the best part of this new show is the actress who plays Kimmy herself. We saw a glimmer of her brilliance as timid, childish Becca in 2011's Bridesmaids but now with a lead role she really proves she's got what it takes to pave a name for herself in television comedy. The immeasurable energy she brings to the show as well as her on-point timing and facial expressions really make the show as great as it is!

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has already been renewed for a second season and if the first season is anything to go by, I cannot wait!
