I've already seen a few of these types of films emerging and it's only October! So I thought I'd break down a bunch of films that I already think will get some kind of Oscar tip next year...
Captain Phillips - Released 18th October 2013
Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks wouldn't be a stranger to such high praise, and there's a strong chance he will garner this kind of reception with this depiction of a real-life story.
As a cargo tanker travels through Somali waters, a captain and his crew are ambushed by a group of violent pirates trying to make some big money.
Unbelievably tense, brutal and action-packed from start to finish, Captain Phillips certainly shows off Hank's skills and will have audiences on the edge of their seat.
Gravity - Released 8th November 2013
Science-fiction; a genre not used to Oscar recognition but the praise that Gravity has been given already hints that it will win something, even if just for it's CGI.
Directed by Alfonso CuarĂ³n and starring George Clooney and Sarah Bullock, the film focusses on an astronaut and a medical engineer who find themselves stranded alone in space, fighting for their lives, after their shuttle malfunctions.
Being branded as intense, stunning and disturbing; you would be crazy not to catch this 3D piece on the big screen.
All Is Lost - Released 26th December 2013
Despite doing a few films here and there over the years, this sees Robert Redford's first major lead role in years and could see him getting an Oscar nom! The only actor in the entire movie, Redford carries the whole film single-handedly and this is a challenge that if done well, could see him getting high praise amongst critics and award boards.
Simply called 'Our Man', Redford's character has to endure days and days out at sea, when his boat comes into collision with a shipping container.
The Railway Man - Released 1st January 2014
It's already boasting two previous Academy Award winning actors as the two leads, and with a war-based theme, how can this be ignored?
The Railway Man centres around worried wife Patti, keen to discover the truth about her husband Eric's haunting past stemming from his time during World War II.
The trailer looks serious, touching and surprisingly dark, unusual for these two actors normally seen in slightly lighter pieces. Their presence in the film will undoubtedly be a pull-in for many.
The Wolf Of Wall Street - Released 17th January 2014
Could this finally be DiCaprio's year? It has all the right ingredients for an award winner - a script that has been based on a true story, a seemingly darkish tale and Martin Scorsese as director. He just may do it this time. Go on Leo!
Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio) is a wealthy stockbroker, who's greed and cocky nature leads to him getting entangled in a world of crime and corruption.
12 Years A Slave - Released 24th January 2014
It's no secret that pieces dripping with real history, particularly American history, always get some sort of recognition in all of the award shows. If it's controversial history like this piece, even more so. Now when you combine that with the talents of Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender and Shame director Steve Mc Queen - chances are you're going to get at least a nomination.
It tells the story of free man, Solomon Northup from New York who gets abducted and sold into slavery, never giving up the hope that, even after several years, he will not only survive his ordeal but one day escape and return to his family.
