Is 'The Mortal Instruments' the most advertised film ever?

I first saw the trailer for The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones on the DVD for 2012's The Perks Of Being A Wallflower and I must admit, at first, I wasn't convinced it was something I wanted to see. It looked a little cheesy and a little too child-audience aimed. But when things start to be advertised everywhere you go, you take notice, and the film's relentless promotion had me intrigued.

The trailer gave the film the appearance of something reminiscent of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Twilight and perhaps, Beautiful Creatures all rolled into one. Clary is a typical New York teenager who starts seeing a mysterious, seemingly dark young man everywhere she goes. Whilst wondering why she is the only one who can apparently see him, Clary discovers she is a descendant amongst a line of Shadowhunters, a large group of half-angels who protect humans from an array of demon-like creatures including vampires, werewolves and dark wizards. When her family are put in danger, she must team-up with these secret warriors and help fight the evil that threatens her and those around her.

My initial blasé attitude towards this film was first challenged when I first realised how long it was being advertised for. When I first saw the advert, I figured it would come out in the next month or so, but when half a year went by and I was still seeing trailers without hearing of a cinema release date, I figured "There's got to be some hype around this one."

After some research and discovering it's whole premise was based on a very successful series of young adult fantasy books (written by Cassandra Clare), I was fully on board. I was a big fan of the Twilight series and consequently, the film adaptations and I feel that this could be of a similar vain, and now that the vampire franchise has completely finished now, there's certainly room in the market for a new fantasy series.

Usually, if things are advertised for a good year previous to their release, they're intention is to be the next big thing and more often than not, they don't disappoint. Superhero movies such as The Dark Knight Rises or Avengers Assemble have been treated this way in the past, having very long promotional periods to then go on to be blockbuster smashes. Hopefully, The Mortal Instruments will turn out the same way.

Please come back to see my review of The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones after it's release on the 21st August!
